Unhinged Ambitious Mom Hack on a Budget: Careers Opportunities + Private School Tuition Discount
Welcome to Episode One of Money Unhinged
If you’re a smart and ambitious mom and you want a career, a job that aligns with your kid’s schedule, and the best possible education options for them. Most people assume you have to pick two of those three.
Here’s the hack: a career at a top private school.

These schools aren’t only hiring teachers. They also need a Director of Finance, a Director of Communications, a Director of Admissions, advancement and fundraising leads, HR, events, facilities and even investment staff. And many of these jobs pay six figures.
The part most parents miss is tuition remission. Nearly every private school gives employees a discount on their own kids’ tuition. Discounts range around 50%, and at a nonprofit school it can be tax-free.
Here’s how, step by step.
Step 1: List the top 10 private schools near you
Have AI build the list. Paste this into Claude or ChatGPT:
“Give me a list of the top 10 private schools in [your city/county, state]. For each one, include its grade levels and a link to its careers or employment page. Then search their current openings for roles in [your field — e.g., finance, marketing/communications, admissions, HR, fundraising, events].”
Step 2: Check each school’s careers page
Most school websites put careers in the footer. Look for “Careers,” “Employment,” “Work With Us” or “Join Our Team.” If you can’t find it, search Google for “[School name] careers.”
Look past the teaching jobs. A lot of the well-paid roles are filed under “Administrative,” “Professional Staff” or “Operations.”
Step 3: Search the independent-school job boards
If a school’s own page is empty, try the boards these schools actually post on:
- NAIS Career Center: https://careers.nais.org/ (the national board for independent schools, free to browse and apply)
- NBOA CareerHQ: https://careerhq.nboa.org/ (finance, business office, operations, HR and CFO roles)
- Carney, Sandoe & Associates: https://www.carneysandoe.com/for-job-seekers/ (a free recruiter for job seekers, with openings that often aren’t posted publicly)
- Regional associations: examples include https://www.isasw.org/position-listings (Southwest) and https://nwais.org/networking/opening_search.asp (Northwest). Search “[your state] association of independent schools jobs” to find yours.
- CASE Career Central: https://careers.case.org/ (fundraising and advancement roles)
Tip: Turn on job alerts. These roles open and fill quickly
Step 4: Ask the benefit questions
This is where the hack pays off, so know the details:
- What’s the tuition remission percentage? The median is 50%, and some schools offer more (or less based on tenure).
- Does it apply to my job category? Most schools extend it to all staff, not just faculty.
- Is there a waiting period? Some schools require a year of service first.
- Is admission for my child guaranteed or given priority? Usually it isn’t guaranteed.
- Is it tax-free? At a nonprofit school it generally qualifies under IRS Section 117(d).
- What’s the schedule like? Ask about summer hours, school breaks and any remote days.
- Is there a cap on how many children are covered?
The bottom line: a solid income, career opportunities, and a top private school education at a discount of the price. It’s unhinged, and worth a try!
