The Aging Parent Planning Checklist

The Aging Parent Planning Checklist

We are the generation raising kids, building careers, and quietly realizing our parents are getting older. And most of us don’t feel very prepared.

Why This Matters So Much To Me

If we want to live in a world where your family feels supported, we have to be proactive.

Have the conversation early.
Document everything calmly.
Save this.Send it to your siblings.
Start the conversation.

I made this Aging Parent Planning Checklist for millennials supporting our parents.

Let us break this down.

1. Medical

This is step one. But because it is foundational.

Do you have:

• Doctor and insurance information
• A complete medication list
• Healthcare proxy documents
• HIPAA authorization forms
• A living will

If you cannot access their information in an emergency, you are not empowered. You are reactive.

2. Financial

This is where most families avoid the conversation.

You need:

• Bank and retirement account list
• Beneficiaries reviewed and updated
• Monthly bills documented
• Life insurance located
• Power of attorney in place

3. Digital

Our parents now live online as well.

Do you have:

• A phone passcode plan
• Email access plan
• Investment and utility logins
• A password storage system

Digital confusion can freeze everything. From paying the mortgage to accessing medical portals.

4. Long Term Planning

This is where the real conversation begins.

• Where will you live as you age?
• If you cannot drive, what is the plan?
• Would you ever want to move in with family?
• Is long term care insurance in place?

The goal is to understand their wishes before decisions are made under pressure.

The One Question That Opens Everything

If something happened tomorrow, what would you want us to do?

That question changes the tone from control to care.
